The measurement question

What window-frame obstructions and side-return dimensions must the selected curtain hardware and fabric clear?

The useful result is a dimensioned elevation and side view. It keeps opening, trim, wall space, handles, sill, radiator, bracket, rod or track, and fabric return in one coordinate record. Raw room measurements remain distinct from any allowance stated by the selected system.

Stop condition: if bracket projection, track geometry, return definition, panel construction, or another required hardware dimension is not documented for the selected system, record UNKNOWN or VERIFY. Do not fill the gap with a generic number.

Build the elevation and side view

  1. Choose a datum. Mark the wall plane and window centerline; label the unit system.
  2. Draw the front elevation. Add opening, outside trim, wall space, and obstructions at their measured positions.
  3. Draw the side view. Add trim projection, handle/crank travel, sill/radiator projection, bracket or track geometry, and the intended fabric path.
  4. Branch by mount type. Wall mounting uses wall/trim conflicts and bracket projection. Ceiling mounting uses ceiling position, track drop, and the resulting fabric path. Do not assume either branch is permitted.
  5. Compare, then classify. A documented clear path is PASS. A measured collision is BLOCKED. A missing selected-system dimension is VERIFY or UNKNOWN. An absent obstruction is NOT_APPLICABLE.

Evidence boundaries

IKEA's current window-solutions measuring guide separates measured window width and height from the added space and bracket guidance used by its system. Use it as a measurement-method example; apply its allowances only within its stated product/system scope.

Kirsch's Superfine and conventional traverse-rod instructions depict the drapery return as a defined part of that rod/panel arrangement. It is not a universal side allowance.

Selected-system boundary: exact bracket projection, track drop, return dimension, panel construction, and fastening requirements remain UNKNOWN until the selected hardware and panel documents establish them.

Use the completed record

This owner maps trim, obstructions, and return geometry. It does not choose rod width, bracket fasteners, panel fullness, or guarantee a blackout result.
