Router-change recovery
Preserve the old network identity when it is safe
If the old Wi-Fi name, password, and security mode were secure and remain suitable, reusing them on the replacement router can let many devices reconnect. Google currently recommends reusing the old SSID and password when replacing its mesh equipment to keep devices connected.
This is not universal. Some devices store additional network state, some require an app-led network change, and some must be recommissioned. Follow instructions for the exact model before resetting it.
Router-change recovery
Bring infrastructure back in dependency order
- Confirm the modem or upstream internet connection.
- Bring up the primary router, then Ethernet switches and mesh nodes.
- Verify one phone can use the home LAN with cellular data disabled.
- Reconnect controllers, bridges, and Thread border routers.
- Test direct device control before testing automations.
- Update devices that still hold old credentials one model family at a time.
Router-change recovery
A familiar SSID does not guarantee the same LAN
A replacement can keep the same Wi-Fi name while changing addressing, guest-network rules, multicast handling, or which box performs routing. Avoid running two routers unintentionally unless the topology is deliberate; devices on different routed or isolated networks may have internet access but fail to discover one another locally.
If only remote cloud control works, test from a phone on the home Wi-Fi. If only some device families fail, identify their bridge, radio, band, or account dependency before changing global settings.
Router-change recovery
Reset last, with a rebuild plan
Before a factory reset, capture setup codes, owner accounts, room names, automations, and bridge dependencies. Reset only the specific device after its manufacturer’s current instructions identify that as the next step. A whole-home reset destroys evidence and turns one network change into many ownership and automation changes.
Evidence boundary
Network behavior depends on the exact setup
Router, mesh, platform, model, software, and region behavior can change. Confirm current documentation before changing network security or resetting a device. Never expose devices directly to the internet merely to restore discovery.
