Checklist path

Check reach, glare, and cord path together

A nightstand lamp is placement-ready only when the switch is reachable from the normal lying and sitting positions, the shade does not shine directly into the eyes, and the cord path does not cross a walkway or pinch behind furniture.

Test the placement with pillows, books, chargers, water, and any items that normally sit on the nightstand. A lamp that fits an empty table may fail once the real bedside surface is restored.

  • Reach the switch without leaning over the shade.
  • Check glare from lying, sitting, and doorway angles.
  • Confirm the cord does not cross a walking path.
  • Leave room for normal bedside objects.

Bedside placement succeeds when reach, glare, and cord safety all pass.

Fit check

Decision and verification steps

If the lamp lights the pillow more than the page, move the shade or height before changing brightness. If the switch is behind the shade, the lamp may need a different side, switch type, or table position.

Verify manufacturer instructions for shade clearance, cord use, bulb limits, and stable placement. Do not route cords under rugs or furniture pressure points unless the instructions specifically allow the arrangement.

  • If glare hits the eyes, adjust height or shade direction.
  • If the switch is hard to reach, change placement before relying on it.
  • If the cord is pinched or hidden unsafely, reroute it.
  • Check bulb and shade limits before use.

A convenient bedside lamp should not create a reach or cord hazard.
