Place sensors for the question they answer

A temperature sensor near sunlight, a supply vent, exterior door, kitchen heat, poorly insulated wall, or outside the HVAC zone can drive the system from an unrepresentative reading. Place a comfort sensor in occupied space with free airflow and within the zone it controls. Air-quality sensors have different siting needs; follow their maker and EPA guidance rather than treating every sensor as interchangeable.

Use humidity readings as a pattern, not a verdict

Relative humidity changes with temperature, weather, room activity, and sensor location. EPA's general home guidance describes 30% to 50% as a useful indoor range, but a single reading does not identify the moisture source or prove that HVAC equipment should run.

Compare readings from a stable occupied location over time, then check for practical causes such as shower moisture, cooking, damp materials, condensation, drainage, or outdoor air. Follow equipment instructions before changing humidifier, dehumidifier, ventilation, or thermostat controls. Persistent dampness, visible mold, combustion concerns, or unexplained moisture needs qualified assessment.

Test conflicts and fallbacks

  1. Confirm the active HVAC mode and weekly schedule.
  2. Identify the active temperature sensor for each time block.
  3. Test away, presence, learning, and platform routines separately.
  4. Check whether a manual hold expires or overrides the next schedule event.
  5. Keep direct thermostat control available if the network or cloud is unavailable.

Never automate temperatures or equipment modes outside manufacturer-supported operating limits.
