Treat loss of comfort and loss of app control differently
If the thermostat still controls the system locally but the app is offline, start with Wi-Fi, account, platform, and service status. If the display is blank or the HVAC does not respond locally, do not blame the network. Read power and backup-heat symptoms before changing wiring
Repeated low-battery warnings, a blank display, or Wi-Fi that drops when heating or cooling starts can point to thermostat-power trouble, but they can also follow an HVAC safety shutdown. Record the exact code, when power disappears, and which equipment was running. Use only the maker's model-specific power checks; a C-wire change is not a universal repair.
On a heat pump, unexpected auxiliary heat may reflect weather, a large setpoint change, equipment configuration, or a fault. Emergency heat is a separate manual mode on supported systems, not a general-purpose speed boost. If the home is losing safe temperature, the system makes unusual noise or odor, or backup heat runs unexpectedly, stop experimenting and call qualified HVAC service.
